Dearly Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Today we hear one of the most beautiful and important parables that our Lord Jesus Christ ever spoke — the Parable of the Sower. Christ tells us about a man who went out to sow his seed. Some of it fell by the wayside and was eaten by birds; some fell on rocky ground and withered away; some fell among thorns and was choked; and some fell on good soil and produced much fruit.

This parable is not just a story about farming. It is a mirror held up to our hearts. The seed is the Word of God, and the soil is the condition of our souls.

Saint John Chrysostom says that the Lord speaks of the soul as soil because, like earth, it can either bring forth fruit or grow nothing at all. He writes, “The heart of man is able to receive the seed of God’s Word, but whether it bears fruit depends on the care and attention we give to it.”

Every one of us hears the same Word. But not everyone bears the same fruit. The problem is not with the seed — God’s Word is always powerful and full of life. The problem is with the soil, the condition of our hearts.

The first kind of soil, the path, is hard and beaten down. The Word cannot enter because the heart has become closed. Saint Cyril of Alexandria explains that this happens when people hear the Gospel but do not take it seriously, and so “the devil comes and snatches the seed away.” How many times do we hear the Scriptures read in church, yet leave unchanged? How often do we let distractions, doubts, or pride steal the Word from our hearts?

The second kind of soil, the rocky ground, represents those who receive the Word with joy but have no root. Saint Gregory Palamas says that these are people who love the beauty of the Gospel but flee when trials come. When life becomes difficult, their faith withers because it was only on the surface. Brothers and sisters, the Christian life is not just about feelings; it is about faithfulness — holding fast to Christ in times of joy and in times of sorrow.

The third kind of soil, the thorny ground, is where the Word is choked by “the cares, riches, and pleasures of life.” Saint John Chrysostom warns us that even after we begin to grow in faith, we must be careful not to let worldly anxieties suffocate our spiritual life. We all have responsibilities — work, family, finances — but when these things dominate our minds, the Word of God finds no space to breathe.

Finally, there is the good soil — the heart that hears the Word, keeps it, and bears fruit with patience. Notice that Jesus says “with patience.” Spiritual growth is not instant. Saint Nicholas Cabasilas reminds us that grace works gradually in the soul, like a seed growing quietly underground. We must water it with prayer, nourish it with the sacraments, and protect it from the weeds of sin.

The Fathers teach us that the soil of the heart can be changed. Even if our hearts have been hard, rocky, or full of thorns, repentance can transform them. Just as a farmer tills the ground to prepare it for seed, we must cultivate our hearts through confession, humility, and love.

Prayer softens the soil. Fasting removes the stones. Almsgiving pulls out the thorns. And the Holy Eucharist fills the soul with divine life. When we live in communion with Christ, our hearts become fertile ground for the Word to take root and grow.

Saint Gregory the Theologian once said, “Let us become good soil, that we may bear fruit — some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty — but all for the glory of God.” The measure of fruitfulness does not matter as much as our faithfulness. Even a small fruit, grown in humility, is precious in the eyes of the Lord.

Today Christ the Sower passes by once again, scattering His divine Word into the field of our hearts. The question is: what kind of soil will He find? Will His Word find a heart open and ready to receive Him?

Let us each prepare our hearts so that the seed may not be wasted. Let us listen with attention, hold fast with patience, and live the Word we hear. Then the Lord will make us “good soil” — souls that bring forth fruit a hundredfold in faith, in hope, and in love. Amen!

On Friday, October 10, 2025, we welcomed at the St. Georgios Cathedral of Stockholm a group from the Uspensky Cathedral Parish of the Orthodox Archdiocese of Helsinki & All Finland; Archpriest Rev. Fr. Teo Merras, Protodeacon Rev. Juha Lampinen, Diaconal worker Ms. Anneli Tamme (originally from Estonia) and Diaconal worker Ms. Paula Ahonen.

We are pleased to announce the formation of a new youth group at St. George Cathedral of Stockholm, under the name GOYS (Greek Orthodox Youth of Scandinavia), with activities beginning on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at 11:30 a.m.

The group is open to all children from 6th through 12th grade and will meet every Sunday, after the Divine Liturgy, for one hour to discuss interesting topics such as friendship, materialism, spiritual life, and Artificial Intelligence.

In addition, the group will organize exciting activities, such as:

a) Volunteering at the Sandwich Factory, preparing coffee and sandwiches for the homeless in Stockholm,

b) Organizing a youth book sale,

c) Playing board games,

d) Learning how to bake prosphora (offering bread), and

e) Concluding the year with a three-day summer camp in early June of the following year.

Καθεδρικός Ναός Αγίου Γεωργίου Στοκχόλμης

Αιδεσιμολογιώτατε π. Γεώργιε,
Μουσικολογιώτατοι,
Αγαπητοί εν Χριστώ Αδελφοί,
Αγαπημένα μας παιδιά,

Στην σημερινή Ευαγγελική περικοπή, ο Χριστός μάς προσφέρει τον «χρυσό κανόνα» της ζωής: «Καθώς θέλετε ἵνα ποιῶσιν ὑμῖν οἱ ἄνθρωποι, καί ὑμεῖς ποιεῖτε αὐτοῖς ὁμοίως».

Μας προτρέπει: «Γίνεσθε οἰκτίρμονες καθώς καί ὁ Πατήρ ὑμῶν οἰκτίρμων ἐστί».

Ο λόγος Του δεν είναι μία απλή ανθρώπινη ηθική, αλλά θεϊκή πρόσκληση, να ζήσουμε όπως ζει ο ίδιος ο Θεός.

Ο Άγιος Ιωάννης ο Χρυσόστομος μάς εξηγεί: «να μην κάνουμε στους άλλους εκείνο που δεν θέλουμε να πάθουμε, και να κάνουμε σ’ εκείνους ό,τι θέλουμε να μας κάνουν».

Συνεχίζει ο Κύριος: «Καί ἐάν ἀγαπᾶτε τούς ἀγαπώντας ὑμᾶς, ποία ὑμῖν χάρις ἐστί;» Δηλαδή, αν περιοριστούμε να αγαπάμε εκείνους που μας αγαπούν, τί το ιδιαίτερο κάνουμε; Αυτό το κάνουν όλοι, ακόμη και οι πιο αμαρτωλοί.

Ο Άγιος Γρηγόριος ο Θεολόγος γράφει: «Το να αγαπάς εκείνους που σε αγαπούν είναι ανθρώπινο, το να αγαπάς εκείνους που δεν σε αγαπούν είναι θείο, το να αγαπάς μάλιστα εκείνους που σε μισούν, είναι όμοιο με τον Θεό».

Το αποκορύφωμα της διδασκαλίας είναι η εντολή, να μιμηθούμε όχι έναν άγγελο ή έναν άγιο, αλλά τον ίδιο τον Θεό!

Να λοιπόν τί σημαίνει να είμαστε ελεήμονες, να συγχωρούμε ακόμη και όταν έχουμε δίκιο, πράττοντας το καλό, χωρίς να περιμένουμε ανταπόδοση και δείχνοντας κατανόηση, αντί να κρίνουμε αυστηρά.

Ο Άγιος Μακάριος ο Αιγύπτιος λέγει: «Η καρδιά που αγάπησε τον Χριστό, αγαπά όλη την κτίση. Δεν μπορεί να μισήσει κανέναν, ακόμη κι αν αδικείται»! Όποιος γίνεται ελεήμων, μοιάζει στον Θεό.

Ας παρακαλέσουμε, λοιπόν, τον Κύριο, να μάς χαρίσει καρδιά καθαρή, γεμάτη ελεημοσύνη, συγχώρηση και αγάπη, ώστε ν᾽ ακουστεί και για μάς ο μακάριος λόγος: «Ἔσεσθε υἱοί Ὑψίστου· ὅτι αὐτός χρηστός ἐστίν ἐπί τούς ἀχαρίστους καί πονηρούς». Αμήν!

On the evening of Thursday, October 2, 2025, His Eminence Metropolitan Cleopas of Sweden and All Scandinavia held the second meeting of the Catechumens of the Holy Metropolis of Sweden, at the facilities of St. George Cathedral of Stockholm (Birger Jarlsgatan 92, 11420 Stockholm).

Metropolitan Cleopas once again was the speaker, in English, since among the participants there are several Catechumens of the Orthodox faith who come from different countries.

The topic of the second lecture was: “The Foolishness of the Cross,” during which the Metropolitan presented a multitude of examples from the Saints of the Church referring to the Mystery of the Cross.

Questions followed the lecture, and clear answers were provided.

It is worth noting that the total number of participants, both in person and online, exceeded forty—double the number from last year.

At the end of the meeting, a reception was offered in the Cathedral Fellowship Hall, in honor of the young people who serve the local Church in various ministries.

The next meeting will take place on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at 6 p.m., again at the facilities of St. George Cathedral of Stockholm, with the theme: “Holy Mission (Ierapostoli).”

Το απόγευμα της Πέμπτης, 2 Οκτωβρίου 2025, ο Σεβ. Μητροπολίτης Σουηδίας και πάσης Σκανδιναυΐας κ. Κλεόπας πραγματοποίησε την δεύτερη συνάντηση Κατηχουμένων της Ι. Μητροπόλεως Σουηδίας, στις εγκαταστάσεις του Καθεδρικού Ναού Αγίου Γεωργίου Στοκχόλμης (Birger Jarlsgatan 92, 11420 Stockholm).

Ο Ποιμενάρχης ήταν και πάλι ο εισηγητής, στην Αγγλική γλώσσα, καθώς, μεταξύ των συμμετεχόντων, υπάρχουν αρκετοί Κατηχούμενοι της Ορθοδόξου πίστεως, οι οποίοι προέρχονται από διαφορετικές χώρες.

Το θέμα και της δεύτερης εισηγήσεως ήταν: «Η τρέλα στου Σταυρού», περί της οποίας ο Ποιμενάρχης παρουσίασε πλειάδα παραδειγμάτων εξ Αγίων της Εκκλησίας, αναφερομένων στου Μυστήριο του Σταυρού!

Ακολούθησαν ερωτήσεις επί της εισηγήσεως και δόθηκαν σαφείς απαντήσεις.

Να σημειωθεί, ότι ο συνολικός αριθμός των συμμετασχόντων, τόσο με φυσική παρουσία, όσο και διαδικτυακά, υπερέβη τους σαράντα, δηλαδή διπλάσιος από πέρυσι.

Στο τέλος της συναντήσεως, προσεφέρθη στην αίθουσα του Καθεδρικού Ναού κέρασμα, προς τιμήν των νέων, οι οποίοι διακονούν την τοπική Εκκλησία σε διαφόρους τομείς.

Η επομένη συνάντηση θα πραγματοποιηθεί την Πέμπτη, 23 Οκτωβρίου 2025, στις 6 μ.μ, και πάλι στις εγκαταστάσεις του Καθεδρικού Ναού Αγίου Γεωργίου Στοκχόλμης, με θέμα “Ιεραποστολή”.

Μετά πάσης λαμπρότητος εορτάστηκε και φέτος η έναρξη των εργασιών του Κοινοβουλίου του Βασιλείου της Σουηδίας, το μεσημέρι της Τρίτης, 9^ης Σεπτεμβρίου 2025, αρχικώς με πανηγυρική Ακολουθία στον Καθεδρικό Ναό Storkyrkan της Λουθηρανικής Εκκλησίας, στην Στοκχόλμη.

Η εορταστική αυτή Ακολουθία αποτελεί αναπόσπαστο μέρος της επίσημης τελετής έναρξης των εργασιών του Σουηδικού Κοινοβουλίου και το εκκλησιαστικό προοίμιο της Κοινοβουλευτικής Περιόδου 2025/26, μια περίσταση κατά την οποία τα Μέλη του Κοινοβουλίου, επιφανείς Εκπρόσωποι της Βασιλικής Αυλής και σύμπασα η Βασιλική Οικογένεια της Σουηδίας συγκεντρώνονται, για να συμπροσευχηθούν, πριν από την έναρξη των κοινοβουλευτικών εργασιών.

Ο Ιερατικώς Προϊστάμενος (Domprost) του Καθεδρικού Ναού, Αιδεσιμ. κ. Jonas Eek, υπογράμμισε την σημασία της έναρξης της δημόσιας ζωής της Σουηδίας, με χριστιανικό στοχασμό και προσευχή.

Ακολούθως, τον Πανηγυρικό της ημέρας εκφώνησε ο Λουθηρανός Επίσκοπος της Στοκχόλμης κ. Andreas Holmberg. Ξεκίνησε την ομιλία του με την ακόλουθη συγκινητική αναφορά στην Α. Θ. Παναγιότητα, τον Οικουμενικό Πατριάρχη κ.κ. Βαρθολομαίο:

“Ακριβώς στο σημείο όπου στέκομαι (στον Άμβωνα), πριν από δύο εβδομάδες στεκόταν ο ανώτατος Ηγέτης του Ορθόδοξου εκκλησιαστικού κόσμου, ο Πατριάρχης Βαρθολομαίος Α΄ της Κωνσταντινουπόλεως, Εκπρόσωπος 300 εκατομμυρίων Ορθοδόξων χριστιανών.

Μαζί με πολλούς άλλους Ηγέτες της ανά τον κόσμον Εκκλησίας, εορτάσαμε την εκατονταετηρίδα της Οικουμενικής Συνάντησης για την ειρήνη, που ακούσαμε στην εισαγωγή.

Ο Πατριάρχης τόνισε, ότι η αληθινή ειρήνη αφορά, τόσο την εσωτερική μεταμόρφωση στην ζωή κάθε ανθρώπου, όσο και την μεταμόρφωση της κοινωνίας στο σύνολό της.

Ακόμη και σήμερα, βρίσκονται εδώ εκπρόσωποι της ανά τον κόσμον Εκκλησίας, για να μοιραστούν μαζί μας τα λόγια της Αγίας Γραφής για την ειρήνη.

Στην αρχή ενός από τα πιο σημαντικά κείμενα της παγκόσμιας λογοτεχνίας, της Επί του Όρους Ομιλίας, ο Ιησούς μιλά, επίσης, για την ειρήνη και λέει: «Μακάριοι οι ειρηνοποιοί».

Η ειρήνη δεν πέφτει απλώς από τον ουρανό, ούτε εμφανίζεται από μόνη της. Δημιουργείται, απαιτεί εργασία, και γι’ αυτό η κλήση μας είναι να είμαστε ειρηνοποιοί.

Αξιότιμα Μέλη του Κοινοβουλίου, κατά το εργασιακό έτος που τώρα ξεκινά: δημιουργήστε ειρήνη, εργαστείτε για την ειρήνη! Και όλοι εμείς, μαζί με εσάς, ας είμαστε ειρηνοποιοί! Μακάριοι οι ειρηνοποιοί.”

Στην συνέχεια, στα πλαίσια των εορτασμών της επετείου των 100 ετών από το Οικουμενικό Συνέδριο της Στοκχόλμης του 1925 και του Οικουμενικού Έτους 2025 (“Ekumeniska året 2025”), με θέμα: «Καιρός για την ειρήνη του Θεού», η Ουκρανή κ. Μαρία Valorna ανέγνωσε απόσπασμα από τον Προφήτη Ησαΐα (2:4), από την Λουθηρανική Εκκλησία της Σουηδίας η κ. Boel Hössjer Sundman ανέγνωσε απόσπασμα από την προς Γαλάτας επιστολή (3:27–28), ο Καρδινάλιος Σεβ. κ. Anders Arborelius ανέγνωσε από το Βιβλίο των Ψαλμών (85:11–14) και από την Ευαγγελική Εκκλησία της Νοτίου Ινδίας ο Αιδεσιμ. κ. Rathinamn Mariyadoss ανέγνωσε από το κατά Μάρκον Ευαγγέλιο (16:15).

Στην ως άνω Ακολουθία, συμμετείχε η Χορωδία του Λουθηρανικού Καθεδρικού Ναού Στοκχόλμης (Stockholms domkyrkokör), υπό την Διεύθυνση του Μουσικολ. κ. Johan Hammarström), και η Στρατιωτική Μπάντα Δραγόνων της Βασιλικής Φρουράς (Livgardets dragonmusikkår), την οποία διηύθυνε ο Μαέστρος κ. Joakim Unander, που εκτέλεσε θρησκευτικά εμβατήρια.

Στην τελετή παρευρέθηκε ο Σεβ. Μητροπολίτης Σουηδίας και πάσης Σκανδιναυΐας κ. Κλεόπας, καθώς και 2.000 επιφανείς προσωπικότητες του εκκλησιαστικού και πολιτειακού βίου της Σουηδίας.

Η φετινή Ακολουθία είχε ιδιαίτερο συμβολισμό, καθώς συνδέθηκε με τα 100 χρόνια από το Οικουμενικό Συνέδριο της Στοκχόλμης του 1925, μια κομβική στιγμή στο σύγχρονο Οικουμενικό Κίνημα.

Η εν λόγω Ακολουθία ξεκίνησε λίγο μετά το μεσημέρι (12:10 μ.μ.) και ολοκληρώθηκε εγκαίρως, ώστε να ακολουθήσει η πομπή προς το Κοινοβούλιο.

Στις 2 μ.μ., η συνεδρίαση ξεκίνησε επισήμως, με την Α. Μ., τον Βασιλέα της Σουηδίας Κάρολο ΙΣΤ΄ Γουσταύο, να κηρύσσει την έναρξή της, κατόπιν αιτήματος του Προέδρου της Βουλής.

Στην συνέχεια, ο Πρωθυπουργός της Σουηδίας, Εξοχ. κ. Ulf Kristersson, παρουσίασε την Δήλωση της Κυβερνητικής Πολιτικής του 2025 και το Διάγγελμά του, εστιάζοντας την ομιλία του στην καταπολέμηση του οργανωμένου εγκλήματος, στην Μετανάστευση, στην οικονομία & το κοινωνικό Κράτος, στην εκπαίδευση & την οικογένεια, στο κλίμα και την ενέργεια, στην εξωτερική πολιτική & την ασφάλεια, στην ελευθερία, την δημοκρατία & τον πολιτισμό.

Ο Πρωθυπουργός ολοκλήρωσε τον λόγο του με το ακόλουθο μήνυμα: “Η Σουηδία έχει τεράστιες δυνατότητες. Διαθέτουμε καθαρή ενέργεια, παγκοσμίου κλάσης καινοτομία και υψηλά καταρτισμένο εργατικό δυναμικό.

Στόχος της κυβέρνησης είναι να μεταμορφώσει την Σουηδία, από επικίνδυνη σε ασφαλή, από στασιμότητα σε επιτυχία, από πολιτική αστάθεια σε μακροπρόθεσμη ανάπτυξη. Ένα καλύτερο αύριο μας περιμένει.”

Το πρόγραμμα περιελάμβανε, επίσης, μουσικά μέρη, την εκτέλεση του Εθνικού Ύμνου της Σουηδίας και την επίσημη υποδοχή και αποχώρηση των επισήμων.

Η τελετή αυτή εξακολουθεί να υπενθυμίζει τον ισχυρό δεσμό μεταξύ της Λουθηρανικής Εκκλησίας της Σουηδίας και της Σουηδικής Πολιτείας. Συμβολίζει την ανάγκη για πνευματική θεμελίωση, πριν από τη λήψη αποφάσεων που επηρεάζουν το Έθνος.

With great solemnity, the opening of the new session of the Parliament of the Kingdom of Sweden was celebrated this year as well, on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 9, 2025.

The proceedings began with a festive service held at Storkyrkan Cathedral of the Lutheran Church in Stockholm.

This service forms an integral part of the official ceremony marking the beginning of the Swedish Parliament’s work and serves as the spiritual prelude to the 2025/26 Parliamentary Session.

On this occasion, Members of Parliament, distinguished Representatives of the Royal Court, and the entire Swedish Royal Family gather together in prayer, before the opening of Parliamentary business.

The Dean (Domprost) of Storkyrkan Cathedral, Rev. Jonas Eek, emphasized the importance of beginning Sweden’s public life with Christian reflection and prayer.

The keynote address of the day was delivered by the Lutheran Bishop of Stockholm, Andreas Holmberg. He began his speech with a moving reference to His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew:

“Precisely at the spot where I now stand (the pulpit), only two weeks ago stood the highest Leader of the Orthodox Christian world, Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople, the representative of 300 million Orthodox Christians.

Together with many other Church Leaders from around the globe, we celebrated the centenary of the Ecumenical Meeting for Peace, as we heard in the introduction.

The Patriarch stressed that true peace concerns both the inner transformation of each individual’s life and the transformation of society as a whole.

Even today, representatives of the worldwide Church are here to share with us the words of Holy Scripture about peace.

At the beginning of one of the most important texts in world literature, the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus also speaks of peace and says: ‘Blessed are the peacemakers.’

Peace does not simply fall from heaven, nor does it appear on its own. It is created; it requires work. That is why our calling is to be peacemakers.

Honorable Members of Parliament, in this working year that now begins: create peace, work for peace! And may we all, together with you, be peacemakers! Blessed are the peacemakers.”

The service also formed part of the commemorations of the 100th anniversary of the 1925 Stockholm Ecumenical Conference and the Ecumenical Year 2025 (Ekumeniska året 2025), themed: “A Time for God’s Peace.”

Scripture readings were offered by Ms. Maria Valorna from Ukraine (Isaiah 2:4), Ms. Boel Hössjer Sundman from the Lutheran Church of Sweden (Galatians 3:27–28), H.E. Cardinal Anders Arborelius (Psalm 85:11–14), and Rev. Rathinamn Mariyadoss from the Evangelical Church of South India (Mark 16:15).

The music for the service was provided by the Stockholm Cathedral Choir (Stockholms domkyrkokör), under the direction of musicologist Mr. Johan Hammarström, and the Royal Guard’s Dragoon Band (Livgardets dragonmusikkår), conducted by Maestro Mr. Joakim Unander, who performed sacred marches.

Among those present were His Eminence Metropolitan Cleopas of Sweden and All Scandinavia, along with 2,000 distinguished figures from Sweden’s ecclesiastical and civic life.

This year’s service carried particular symbolism, as it was linked to the centenary of the 1925 Stockholm Ecumenical Conference—a landmark event in the modern Ecumenical Movement.

The service began shortly after noon (12:10 p.m.) and concluded in time for the formal procession to Parliament.

At 2:00 p.m., the Parliamentary session officially opened, with His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden declaring its commencement at the request of the Speaker of Parliament.

Following this, the Prime Minister of Sweden, H.E. Ulf Kristersson, presented the 2025 Government Policy Statement and his Address, focusing on combating organized crime, migration, the economy and welfare, education and family, climate and energy, foreign policy and security, as well as freedom, democracy, and culture.

The Prime Minister concluded his speech with the following message:
“Sweden has enormous potential. We have clean energy, world-class innovation, and a highly skilled workforce.

The goal of the government is to transform Sweden: from dangerous to safe, from stagnation to success, from political instability to long-term growth. A better tomorrow awaits us.”

The program also included musical performances, the singing of the Swedish National Anthem, and the official arrival and departure of dignitaries.

This ceremony continues to remind us of the strong bond between the Lutheran Church of Sweden and the Swedish State. It symbolizes the need for spiritual grounding before decisions are made that affect the Nation.

The tradition of collective prayer and unity before the opening of the parliamentary session, centuries old, offers spiritual guidance to the leadership of the Swedish State.
