On the morning of Monday, August 25, 2025, His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew concluded His visit to Stockholm.

Prior to His departure, accompanied by the Members of the Patriarchal Entourage, He visited the Skogskyrkogården Cemetery, where He held a memorial service (trisagion) at the grave of the late Metropolitan Pavlos, former Metropolitan of Amaseia, for the repose of his soul.

Following this, He proceeded with His Entourage to the Stockholm Airport in the Bromma area, from where — after once again expressing His gratitude to the local Metropolitan Cleopas for the hospitality extended, conveying the Patriarchal satisfaction with the work being carried out, and bestowing His Patriarchal blessing and wishes — He departed for Rimini, Italy.

Βαρθολομαίος, χοροστάτησε κατά την Θεία Λειτουργία, στον Καθεδρικό Ναό Αγίου Γεωργίου Στοκχόλμης, αφού προηγουμένως ετέλεσε την ακολουθία των Θυρανοιξίων, με αφορμή την ολοκλήρωση της εκ βάθρων εξωτερικής και εσωτερικής αποκαταστάσεως αυτού.

Στην Θεία Λειτουργία παρέστησαν ο Σεβ. Αρχιεπίσκοπος Ελσιγκίου και πάσης Φιλλανδίας κ. Ηλίας, ο Σεβ. Μητροπολίτης Ταλλίνης και πάσης Εσθονίας κ. Στέφανος, ο Σεβ. Μητροπολίτης Νέας Ιερσέης κ. Απόστολος και ο οικείος Μητροπολίτης Σουηδίας και πάσης Σκανδιναυΐας κ. Κλεόπας.

Παρέστησαν, επίσης, ο Εξοχ. Υπουργός Ψηφιακής Πολιτικής κ. Δημήτριος Παπαστεργίου μετά της συζύγου του, ο Υφυπουργός Εξωτερικών, Αρμόδιος για θέματα Αποδήμου Ελληνισμού, Εξοχ. κ. Ιωάννης Μιχαήλ Λοβέρδος μετά τριμελούς συνοδείας, οι Εξοχώτατοι Πρέσβεις Ελλάδος και Κύπρου, κ.κ. Αικατερίνη Φουντουλάκη και Σόλων Σάββα, η Γεν. Πρόξενος του Παναμά στις ΗΠΑ Εντιμ. κ. Η Σεπτή της Ορθοδοξίας Κορυφή, στην ομιλία Της, ανεφέρθη στην θεολογική σημασία του ναού, καθώς και στην παρουσία τόσων νέων, που διψούν για την Ορθοδοξία και γίνονται φορείς του Ελληνικού πνεύματος και των αξιών του ευσεβούς ημών Γένους, ενώ εξέφρασε την Πατριαρχική ευαρέσκεια προς τον Ποιμενάρχη των Σκανδιναυϊκών Χωρών Σεβ. κ. Κλεόπα, που, όπως επεσήμανε, στα 11 χρόνια της αρχιερατείας του, έχει σημειωθεί αξιόλογο πνευματικό, συγγραφικό, διοικητικό και εν γένει έργο, που αναπαύει τους ανθρώπους και τιμά την παρουσία της Πρωτοθρόνου Εκκλησίας, στις απαρτίζουσες την Ι. Μητρόπολη Σουηδίας Χώρες.

Στην αντιφώνησή του, ο Σεβ. κ. Κλεόπας εξέφρασε την χαρά και συγκίνησή του, που για τρίτη φορά, επί αρχιερατείας του, ο Οικουμενικός Πατριάρχης κ.κ. Βαρθολομαίος επισκέπτεται την Επαρχία του, μη φειδόμενος κόπου, αποδεικνύοντας την πατρική μέριμνα και στοργή Του για τα ανά τον κόσμο διεσπαρμένα τέκνα της Μητρός Εκκλησίας, και Τον παρεκάλεσε, να ευλογήσει πατριαρχικώς το ευσεβές ποίμνιο Αυτής στην Σκανδιναυΐα καθόλη.

Την μεσημβρία της ιδίας, η Α. Θ. Παναγιότης, η τιμία Πατριαρχική Συνοδεία και λοιποί προσκεκλημένοι, παρεκάθησαν σε γεύμα, στο στιατόριο Cypern, το οποίο ευγενώς προσέφεραν οι ιδιοκτήτες αυτού, κ.κ. Νικόλαος Αθανασίου και Αθανάσιος Καλπάκας.

Το απόγευμα της ιδίας, ο Οικουμενικός Πατριάρχης, συνοδευόμενος από τα μέλη της Πατριαρχικής Συνοδείας και τους Άρχοντες Οφικιαλίους της Μητρός Εκκλησίας εξ Αμερικής, ευγενώς ανταποκριθείς στην πρόσκληση του Αρχιεπισκόπου της Λουθηρανικής Εκκλησίας, Σεβ. κ. Martin Modéus, παρέστη στον Καθεδρικό Ναό της Ουψάλης (Domkyrka), όπου ανέγνωσε το Σύμβολο της Πίστεως, της Νικαίας.

Στην παρατεθείσα τράπεζα της Αρχιεπισκοπικής κατοικίας, αντηλλάγησαν εκατέρωθεν προσφωνήσεις και αντιφωνήσεις, ενώ επιβεβαιώθηκε η διάθεσις διαλόγου και συνεργασίας, για την επικράτηση της ειρήνης του Θεού στον κόσμο.

On the morning of Sunday, August 24, 2025, His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew presided over the Divine Liturgy at the Saint George Cathedral of Stockholm, following the service of the Thyranoixia, which marked the completion of a thorough restoration of the Cathedral’s exterior and interior.

Present at the Divine Liturgy were His Eminence Archbishop Leo of Helsinki and All Finland, His Eminence Metropolitan Stephanos of Tallinn and All Estonia, His Eminence Metropolitan Apostolos of New Jersey, and the local hierarch, His Eminence Metropolitan Cleopas of Sweden and All Scandinavia.

Also in attendance were His Excellency Mr. Dimitrios Papastergiou, Minister of Digital Governance, accompanied by his wife; His Excellency Mr. Ioannis Michail Loverdos, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs responsible for Hellenes Abroad, accompanied by his 3-member entourage; Their Excellencies the Ambassadors of Greece and Cyprus, Ms. Aikaterini Foundoulaki and Mr. Solon Savva, respectively; the Honorable Ms. Georgia Athanasopulos, Consul General of Panama in the U.S., accompanied by Greek businessman Mr. Manolis Petroyiannis; and the Apostolic Nuncio in Stockholm, His Excellency Archbishop Julio Murat of Orange.

Also present were Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate from America with their spouses—Drs. Anthony & Maria Limberakis, Gus & Gail Pablecas, John Mindala, Gerry & Jeannie Ranglas, Stamatis & Anita Kartalopoulos, Demetrios & Eleni Bousis, Isidoros & Maria Garifalakis, Savvas & Maria Tsivikou—as well as various institutional representatives, members of associations, academics, scientists, physicians, and a large number of faithful who filled the Cathedral from early in the morning.

In His homily, the venerable Head of Orthodoxy spoke about the theological significance of the church and the presence of so many young people thirsting for Orthodoxy, becoming bearers of the Hellenic spirit and the values of our devout nation.

He also expressed Patriarchal satisfaction with the Shepherd of the Scandinavian lands, His Eminence Cleopas, noting that during his 11 years of episcopal ministry, he has achieved remarkable spiritual, literary, administrative, and overall contributions that comfort the people and honor the presence of the First-Throned Church in the countries that comprise the Holy Metropolis of Sweden.

In his response, His Eminence Cleopas expressed his joy and emotion at welcoming the Ecumenical Patriarch to his province for the third time during his tenure, emphasizing the Patriarch’s tireless efforts and fatherly concern for the faithful scattered across the world. He asked the Patriarch to bestow His Patriarchal blessing on the devout flock of Scandinavia.

At midday, His All-Holiness, the honorable Patriarchal Entourage, and other guests attended a luncheon at the restaurant Cypern, graciously hosted by its owners, Mr. Nikolaos Athanasiou and Mr. Athanasios Kalpakas.

In the afternoon, the Ecumenical Patriarch, accompanied by Members of the Patriarchal Entourage and the Archons of the Mother Church from America, responded graciously to the invitation of the Archbishop of the Lutheran Church in Sweden, His Eminence Martin Modéus, and attended a service at the Uppsala Cathedral (Domkyrka), where he recited the Nicene Creed.

During the reception at the Archbishop’s Residence, mutual greetings and responses were exchanged, confirming a shared commitment to dialogue and cooperation for the promotion of God’s peace in the world.

Ολοκληρώθηκε με επιτυχία η τρίτη ημέρα της υψηλής παρουσίας της Α. Θ. Παναγιότητος, του Οικουμενικού Πατριάρχου κ.κ. Βαρθολομαίου, το Σάββατο, 23 Αυγούστου 2025, στην Στοκχόλμη, κατά το ακόλουθο πρόγραμμα:

Το πρωΐ, ο Παναγιώτατος παρεκάθησε μετά των μελών της τιμίας Πατριαρχικής Συνοδείας, στο πρόγευμα που προσέφεραν οι εξ Αμερικής παρευρισκομένοι Άρχοντες Οφφικιάλιοι της Αγίας του Χριστού Μεγάλης Εκκλησίας, εξεφωνήθησαν δε προσφωνήσεις και αντιφωνήσεις εκατέρωθεν.

Ακολούθως, ο Οικουμενικός Πατριάρχης μετέβη στην Τουρκική Πρεσβεία Στοκχόλμης, όπου εγένετο δεκτός, μετά των μελών της τιμίας Συνοδείας Του, από τον Εξοχ. Πρέσβυ της Τουρκικής Δημοκρατίας στην Σουηδία κ. Yönet Tezel.

Κατόπιν, η Σεπτή της Ορθοδοξίας Κορυφή κατέφθασε στον Καθεδρικό Ναό Αγίου Γεωργίου Στοκχόλμης, όπου πραγματοποιήθηκε η παρουσίασις της νέας μελέτης του Σεβ. Μητροπολίτου Σουηδίας και πάσης Σκανδιναυΐας κ. Κλεόπα, με τίτλο: «Πολύευκτος Φινφίνης, Μητροπολίτης Σουηδίας και πάσης Σκανδιναυΐας, 1969-1974».

Η παρουσίαση εγένετο από τον Πανιερ. Μητροπολίτη Φαναρίου κ. Αγαθάγγελο, Γενικό Διευθυντή της Αποστολικής Διακονίας της Εκκλησίας της Ελλάδος, που ανέλαβε την έκδοση της παρούσης μελέτης του Μητροπολίτου Κλεόπα, και ομίλησαν, επίσης, η 1^η Αντιπρόεδρος της Εθνικής Φιλοπτώχου Αδελφότητος Κυριών Αμερικής κ. Ανίτα Καρταλοπούλου, ο National Commander Άρχων Dr. Anthony J. Limberakis, ο Εξοχ. Υφυπουργός Εξωτερικών της Ελλάδος κ. Ιωάννης Μιχαήλ Λοβέρδος, και εν τέλει ο Παναγιώτατος Οικουμενικός Πατριάρχης κ.κ. Βαρθολομαίος.

Εν συνεχεία, η Α. Θ. Παναγιότης ευλόγησε το γεύμα, που προς τιμήν Του παρέθεσαν οι προς τούτο προσκληθέντες 130 στον αριθμό εθελοντές της Ι. Μητροπόλεως Σουηδίας, οι οποίοι και παρεκάθησαν σε αυτό, στην αίθουσα δεξιώσεων του ως άνω ναού.

Προ της αναχωρήσεως του Παναγιωτάτου, το Μουσικό Τμήμα του Καθεδρικού Ναού παρουσίασε παραδοσιακά τραγούδια, με συνοδεία μουσικών οργάνων, και έψαλαν το πολυχρόνιον του Πατριάρχου.

Την μεσημβρία της ιδίας, ο Παναγιώτατος και τα μέλη της τιμίας Πατριαρχικής Συνοδείας εγένοντο ενθέρμως δεκτοί από τον Πρωθυπουργό της Σουηδίας, Εξοχ. κ. Ulf Kristersson, μετά του οποίου είχαν ωριαία συζήτηση.

Το απόγευμα της ιδίας, ο Πρωτεύθυνος της Ορθοδοξίας και τα μέλη της Πατριαρχικής Συνοδείας μετέβησαν στον Λουθηρανικό Καθεδρικό Ναό της Στοκχόλμης (Storkyrka), όπου, παρουσία του Βασιλικού Ζεύγους της Σουηδίας, του Εξοχ. Πρωθυπουργού της Σουηδίας και ετέρων προσκεκλημένων εκκλησιαστικών και πολιτικών ηγετών, πραγματοποιήθηκε η πανηγυρική εκδήλωση, με την οποία κορυφώθηκαν οι εορτασμοί της Οικουμενικής Εβδομάδος, υπό το γενικό τίτλο: «Ώρα για την Ειρήνη του Θεού», κατά την διάρκεια της οποίας ο Παναγιώτατος ομίλησε περί ειρήνης, από τον άμβωνα του ως άνω Καθεδρικού Ναού.

Μετά ταύτα, ο Οικουμενικός Πατριάρχης και η τιμία Συνοδεία Του μετέβησαν στην αίθουσα εκδηλώσεων του Ρωμαιοκαθολικού Καθεδρικού Ναού της Στοκχόλμης, όπου παρετέθη δεξίωσις.

The third day of the high-profile visit of His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to Stockholm was successfully completed on Saturday, August 23, 2025, according to the following program:

In the morning, His All-Holiness attended a breakfast along with the members of the honorable Patriarchal Entourage. The breakfast was offered by Archons Offikialioi of the Great Church of Christ, who were present from America. Welcoming remarks and responses were exchanged from both sides.

Following this, the Ecumenical Patriarch visited the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm, where He and His Entourage were received by His Excellency Mr. Yönet Tezel, Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey to Sweden.

Subsequently, the Spiritual Head of Orthodoxy arrived at the St. George Cathedral of Stockholm, where the presentation took place of a new scholarly work by His Eminence Metropolitan Cleopas of Sweden and All Scandinavia, titled: “Polyefktos Finfinis, Metropolitan of Sweden and All Scandinavia, 1969–1974.”

The presentation was delivered by His Eminence Metropolitan Agathangelos of Fanarion, Director General of the Apostoliki Diakonia/Ministry of the Church of Greece, which undertook the publication of Metropolitan Cleopas’s study. Additional speakers included: Mrs. Anita Kartalopoulos, First Vice President of the National Philoptochos Society of America, Archon National Commander Dr. Anthony J. Limberakis, His Excellency Mr. Ioannis Michail Loverdos, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece, and, finally, His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.

Afterward, His All-Holiness offered his blessing at a luncheon held in his honor by 130 specially invited volunteers from the Holy Metropolis of Sweden, which took place in the Fellowship Hall of the aforementioned Cathedral.

Before the Patriarch’s departure, the Music Department of the Cathedral performed traditional songs, accompanied by musical instruments, and chanted the Polychronion for the Patriarch.

At midday, His All-Holiness and the Members of His Entourage were warmly received by the Prime Minister of Sweden, His Excellency Mr. Ulf Kristersson, with whom they had a one-hour discussion.

In the afternoon, the spiritual leader of Orthodoxy and His Entourage visited the Lutheran Cathedral of Stockholm (Storkyrkan), where, in the presence of the King and Queen of Sweden, the Swedish Prime Minister, and other invited ecclesiastical and political dignitaries, a festive event took place. This event marked the culmination of the celebrations of the Ecumenical Week, under the overarching theme: “A Time for God’s Peace.”

During this event, His All-Holiness delivered a homily on peace from the pulpit of the Cathedral.

Following that, the Ecumenical Patriarch and His honorable Entourage proceeded to the fellowship hall of the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Stockholm, where a reception was held.

The day concluded with a dinner hosted in honor of His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and His Entourage by the Apostolic Nuncio in Stockholm, His Excellency Archbishop Julio Murat of Orange.

His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, accompanied by the Members of His Entourage — His Eminence Metropolitan Apostolos of New Jersey, the Very Reverend Grand Ecclesiarch Aetios, and the Very Reverend Deacon Epiphanios and His Eminence Metropolitan Cleopas of Sweden and All Scandinavia — completed the second day of His Official Visit to Stockholm on Friday, August 22, 2025.

He first visited the Honorable Mr. Jakob Forssmed, Minister responsible for religious communities in Sweden, with whom he held a one-hour discussion.

Following this, the Ecumenical Patriarch attended a luncheon in His honor at a local restaurant, hosted by Mr. Rafail Poumeyrau, volunteer chief Legal Adviser to the Holy Metropolis of Sweden.

Afterwards, the delegation proceeded to the Lutheran church Filadelfiakyrkan in Stockholm, where the Ecumenical Patriarch delivered a keynote address. Representatives from other Christian denominations and confessions also spoke on the occasion of the celebration of the Ecumenical Week.

Later, as part of the same celebrations, His All-Holiness and His Entourage attended a series of speeches and events at Grunewald Hall in the Stockholm Concert Hall.

The day concluded with a formal dinner in honor of the venerable Head of Orthodoxy, hosted by Her Excellency the Greek Ambassador, Ms. Aikaterini Foundoulaki, at the Ambassadorial Residence in Stockholm.

Στην συνέχεια, παρεκάθησε σε γεύμα, το οποίο παρέθεσε προς τιμήν Του, σε εστιατόριο της πόλεως, ο εθελοντής επικεφαλής της νομικής υπηρεσίας της Ι. Μητροπόλεως Σουηδίας, κ. Ραφαήλ Poumeyrau.

Κατόπιν, άπαντες μετέβησαν στον Λουθηρανικό Ναό της Στοκχόλμης Filadelfiakyrkan, όπου ο Οικουμενικός Πατριάρχης ωμίλησε καταλλήλως, όπως και παρευρεθέντες εκπρόσωποι ετέρων Χριστιανικών Δογμάτων και Ομολογιών, με αφορμή τον εορτασμό της Οικουμενικής Εβδομάδος.

Μετά ταύτα και στα πλαίσια των εν λόγω εορτασμών, η Α. Θ. Παναγιότης, μετά της Συνοδείας Αυτής, παρηκολούθησαν σειρά ομιλιών και εκδηλώσεων στο Grunewald Hall, Stockholm Concert Hall.

Η ημέρα κατέκλεισε, με το παρατεθέν γεύμα προς τιμήν της Σεπτής της Ορθοδοξίας Κορυφής, υπό της Εξοχ. Ελληνίδος Πρέσβεως, κ. Αικατερίνης Φουντουλάκη, στην Πρεσβευτική Κατοικία, στην Στοκχόλμη.

The Holy Metropolis of Sweden and All Scandinavia and its Shepherd, His Eminence Metropolitan Cleopas, welcomed His All-Holiness, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, yesterday afternoon, Thursday, August 21, 2025, at Arlanda Airport in Stockholm.

Responding to the kind invitation of His Eminence Archbishop Martin Modéus of Uppsala and Primate of the Lutheran Church of Sweden, as well as that of His Eminence Metropolitan Cleopas, Shepherd of the Scandinavian countries, His All-Holiness will honor with his esteemed presence the events organized for the Ecumenical Week.

The Ecumenical Patriarch will be a keynote speaker at three major events of the Lutheran Church. During His stay, He will also have the opportunity to offer His blessing at the official dinner and luncheons held in His honor by the Holy Metropolis.

Furthermore, He is scheduled to meet with representatives of the Swedish State Leadership, delegates from other Christian Denominations and Confessions, and to give His paternal blessing to the clergy and faithful of the Mother Church’s flock in Scandinavia.

It is noteworthy that this marks the third time during the tenure of His Eminence Metropolitan Cleopas that the venerable Head of Orthodoxy visits the Holy Metropolis of Sweden.

The first Visit occurred in 2017, when, for the first time, an Ecumenical Patriarch visited Iceland, served as the keynote speaker at an environmental conference, and blessed the establishment of the local parish in honor of the Apostle Bartholomew.

The second Visit took place in 2019, when His All-Holiness visited Stockholm and blessed the commencement of the external restoration works of the St. George Cathedral, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Holy Metropolis of Sweden.

The current, third Visit will culminate on Sunday, August 24, 2025, with the Thyranoixia Service of the Saint George Cathedral of Stockholm, marking the completion of its internal restoration. His All-Holiness will then preside over the Divine Liturgy in Chorostasia.

Our prayer is that the Lord grant many years to the Ecumenical Patriarch, the Spiritual Father of millions of Orthodox faithful around the world, and bless Him with health and strength to continue fulfilling His manifold duties, bestowing His blessing for the progress of the scattered children of the Mother Church and for peace throughout the world!

Ο Παναγιώτατος Οικουμενικός Πατριάρχης θα είναι ομιλητής σε τρεις κεντρικές εκδηλώσεις της Λουθηρανικής Εκκλησίας, ενώ κατά την παραμονή Του θα έχει την ευκαιρία να ευλογήσει τα προς τιμήν Του παρατεθησόμενα από την Ιερά Μητρόπολη δείπνο και γεύματα, ενώ πρόκειται να συναντηθεί με εκπροσώπους της Σουηδικής Πολιτειακής Ηγεσίας, εκπροσώπους ετέρων Χριστιανικών Δογμάτων και Ομολογιών και φυσικά να συναναστραφεί και να ευλογήσει πατρικώς τον Ιερό Κλήρο και το λαό του ποιμνίου της Μητρός Εκκλησίας στην Σκανδιναυΐα.

Να σημειωθεί, ότι είναι η τρίτη κατά σειρά φορά, επί των ημερών της Αρχιερατείας του Σεβ. Μητροπολίτου κ. Κλεόπα, που η Σεπτή της Ορθοδοξίας Κορυφή επισκέπτεται την Ιερά Μητρόπολη Σουηδίας.

Η πρώτη φορά ήταν το έτος 2017, όταν για πρώτη φορά Οικουμενικός Πατριάρχης επισκέφθηκε την Ισλανδία, ήταν κεντρικός ομιλητής συνεδρίου για το περιβάλλον και ευλόγησε την ίδρυση της εκεί ενορίας προς τιμήν του Αποστόλου Βαρθολομαίου.

Η δεύτερη φορά ήταν κατά το έτος 2019, όταν επισκέφθηκε την Στοκχόλμη και ευλόγησε την έναρξη των εξωτερικών εργασιών αποκαταστάσεως του Καθεδρικού Ναού Αγίου Γεωργίου Στοκχόλμης, επ᾽ ευκαιρία των εορτασμών της 50ετηρίδος από της ιδρύσεως της Ιεράς Μητροπόλεως Σουηδίας, και η τρίτη φορά είναι η παρούσα, οπότε την Κυριακή, 24 Αυγούστου 2025, θα τελέσει την ακολουθία των Θυρανοιξίων του Καθεδρικού Ναού Αγίου Γεωργίου Στοκχόλμης, επί τη αποπερατώσει των εργασιών εσωτερικής αποκαταστάσεως αυτού, και θα χοροστατήσει στην Θεία Λειτουργία.

Προσευχή όλων είναι, ο Κύριος να πολυχρονίζει τον Οικουμενικό Πατριάρχη, τον Πνευματικό Πατέρα εκατομμυρίων Ορθοδόξων ανά τον κόσμο, και να του χαρίζει υγεία και δύναμη, για να ανταποκρίνεται στα πολυεύθυνα και πολυσχιδή καθήκοντά Του και να επιδαψιλεύει την ευλογία Του, για την προκοπή των διεσπαρμένων τέκνων της Μητρός Εκκλησίας και την ειρήνη σε όλο τον κόσμο!

Dearly Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Today, the Holy Gospel presents us with a powerful, symbolic event: our Lord walking on the sea, and His saving of the Apostle Peter who, though bold in faith at first, began to sink in doubt.

We begin with Christ sending His disciples away in a boat, while He goes up the mountain alone to pray. Saint John Chrysostom teaches that this reveals Christ’s humanity and divinity. As man, He prays. As God, He will soon walk upon the sea.

Spiritually, the boat represents the Church, and the sea, this troubled world. Christ’s physical absence from the boat reminds us of times when we feel distant from God—yet He is never far from us.

The disciples are caught in a storm. The Fathers interpret this storm as a symbol of the temptations and trials of life. The boat is “beaten by the waves,” just as we are often shaken by anxiety, suffering, and sin.

But in the fourth watch of the night—the darkest hour—Christ comes to them. According to Saint Gregory of Nyssa, this shows that God often allows difficulties to persist for a time, so that our faith may be tested and refined, but He never abandons us.

When the disciples see Him, they are terrified, thinking it is a ghost. Christ reassures them with the words, “Do not be afraid.”

Then comes the remarkable moment when Peter says, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” Christ says, “Come.”

Saint John Chrysostom praises Peter’s zeal, but also notes that his faith was mixed with doubt. As long as Peter looks toward Christ, he walks upon the waves. But when he sees the wind, he begins to sink.

Saint Theophylact explains that Peter symbolizes each one of us. We step out in faith, but when we turn our eyes away from Christ and focus instead on the winds—the dangers, the distractions, the fears—we begin to sink. Yet even in that moment of weakness, Peter cries out, “Lord, save me!” And immediately, Jesus stretches out His hand and catches him.

Let us learn from this: Christ does not abandon us because of our weak faith. He is ready to save us the moment we call upon Him with humility.

Christ’s gentle rebuke is a call to deeper faith. Saint John of Damascus reminds us that faith is not merely belief—it is absolute trust in God’s presence and power, even when the storm rages around us.

Peter’s sinking did not end in death—it ended in being raised up by the hand of Christ. After entering the boat, the storm ceases, and the disciples fall down and worship Christ, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.”

This is the proper response to the saving presence of Christ: worship and confession.

The sea of life is full of storms. Fear, suffering, and temptation threaten us, and at times we, like Peter, begin to sink, but Christ walks upon the waters of chaos. He comes to us in our darkest hour, and He reaches out His hand when we call to Him with faith.

May we always remain in the boat of the Church, and may the Lord, who calms every storm, grant us His peace and lead us to safe harbor in His Kingdom. Amen!
